After almost 2 years of preparation, a meeting organized by Professor Gary Rand and others, “The First International Conference on Environmental Pollution, Restoration and Management” took place last week in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam (March 1-5). The meeting was a major milestone and extremely successful with an attendance of 350 people from 54 different countries. It included a day and a half of workshops and short courses followed by 3 days of platform presentations and posters. There were 200 platform presentations with 100 poster presentations. Professor Rand conducted a half-day short course. In addition, Professor Rand presented a paper and chaired several sessions. According to Dr. Dang Vu Minh, Chairman for Science, Technology, and the Environment of the National Assembly of Viet Nam, this was the largest meeting ever held in Viet Nam. Along with other universities in the U.S., Professor Rand is now organizing future research collaborations in Viet Nam, and will be interacting with government officials and scientists to foster training programs and short courses for Vietnamese students.
