There are many resources in the department and across the college and university to help everyone succeed.

The Department of Earth and Environment hosts a graduate seminar series addressing a variety of relevant topics. All students are welcome to attend. View the spring 2019 seminar schedule.

Department Research

  • Atmospheric Science/Meteorology

Atmospheric science provides facilities to study boundary layer clouds, atmospheric convection, numerical modeling, impacts of sea level rise on coastal systems, hurricanes research, and global climate change.

Additional resources available at the Geographic Information Systems Center, International Hurricane Research Center, and NOAA’s National Hurricane Center, which is located on the FIU main campus.

  • Environmental Science/Geochemistry

Facilities include laboratories for geochemical analytical, hydrological, soils, microbiology, vegetation, geospatial and computational research. Major on-site geochemical analytical facilities include an electron microprobe, scanning electron microscope at the Florida Center for Analytical Electron Spectroscopy (FCAEM), inductively coupled plasma emission spectroanalyzer (ICPES), and thermal ionization mass spectrometer (TIMS) with class 100 clean laboratory for isotopic samples. The soil-plant-microbiology laboratory has NuAir Type II biological safety cabinet, Olympus fluorescence microscope with high-resolution camera, stereo microscopes, temperature controlled shakers, -80F Freezer, Milli Q water system, autoclave, tissue culture growth chamber, incubators, refrigerated high-speed centrifuge, DNA extracting bead beater, DNA fluorometer, PCR amplifying thermocycler, gel electrophoresis, gel documentation system, Shimadzu Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, Shimadzu UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, Shimadzu DOC-TOC Analyzer, Leico TC & TN Analyzer, heating block digester, muffle furnace, ovens, Agilent HPLC, Buchi rotary evaporator, Scintillation Counter.

The Department also owns Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and hydrogeospatial modeling equipment, an agroecology laboratory, on-campus organic garden, shade house, and teaching laboratories for South Florida ecology and environmental sciences. Greenhouse and growth chamber facilities are also available for controlled experiments on plants. The organic garden is adjacent to the on-campus Nature Preserve.

Excellent facilities for chemical analysis of water, soil, vegetation, stable isotopes, and ecotoxicological studies are available through FIU’s Southeast Environmental Research Center, such as the Ecotoxicology lab, South Florida Terrestrial Ecosystems Lab, Microbial Ecology Lab , Freshwater Biogeochemistry lab, Chemical Hydrogeology Lab, and Stable Isotope lab, which are run by Earth and Environment faculty researchers. A relationship with Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden provides excellent resources for teaching and research on conservation/restoration biology. The International Forensic Research Institute (IFRI) also offers excellent analytical resources for Earth and Environment researchers.

  • Geoscience

Geoscience research facilities include geochemical analytical and computational equipment, cryogenic magnetometer, and mineral and rock preparation laboratories. State-of-the-art microscopic facilities are available through FCAEM, including the EPMA, SEM and TEM. Fully equipped laboratories for micropaleontological and sediment analysis have microphotographic equipment and carbonate analyzer. Facilities are also available for research in high temperature/high pressure experimental petrology, experimental structural geology, and ore mineral microscopy with heating/freezing stage for fluid inclusion studies. The department also owns a complete array of instruments for field geophysics and hydrologic studies.

  • Seminar Series

The Department of Earth and Environment hosts a seminar series with speakers from a variety of fields.
